The Origin of Fragrance
The World’s Perfume Capital: Grasse, France
Grasse is a beautiful town in the French Riviera, now known as the perfume capital of the world. But it didn’t start that way. Back in the Middle Ages, Grasse was famous for making leather — the only problem was, leather production didn’t exactly smell nice! To fix this, locals began using flowers from the countryside to perfume the leather.
One day, a pair of scented leather gloves made it to Catherine de’ Medici, the Queen of France. She loved them so much that she named Grasse the royal supplier of perfumed gloves. From there, the town’s reputation grew, and by the 18th century, Grasse had become the center of perfume-making. Even today, many of the world’s most iconic fragrances trace their roots back to Grasse.
